About NRM South

NRM South is a purpose-driven not-for-profit leading efforts to protect, restore, and strengthen the resilience of southern Tasmania’s natural and productive landscapes. As a trusted authority on natural resource management, they connect policy, science, and practice to deliver strategic, evidence-based action with measurable results.

Their activities span coordination, stakeholder management, policy and strategy development, enabling research and development, delivering extension and education, and building capacity amongst landholders and service partners. Their work ensures that resources are strategically directed to protect biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and supports sustainable practices for economic, social and environmental benefit across sectors such as farming, fishing, tourism, and forestry.

With a significant portfolio of environmental projects, NRM South manages multiple funding sources including grants, contract services, philanthropy, and partnerships from Commonwealth, State, and Local Governments, industry, and NGOs. They required a sophisticated system to handle the complex demands of modern project management, whilst also ensuring compliance with increasing regulatory requirements.

The challenge

NRM South faced common sector-wide challenges that were impacting their project delivery. Staff used inconsistent approaches for similar tasks, which led to inefficiencies, errors, and quality issues. When team members went on leave or changed roles, projects risked disruption due to inconsistent or inaccessible documentation and processes with little context.

The organisation relied heavily on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, which created significant risks including missed deadlines, version control problems, and limited collaboration capabilities. Filing and tracking different versions of contracts and agreements was time-consuming and error prone. With multiple stakeholders and funding sources, it became increasingly difficult to manage contract variations and milestones.

Basic spreadsheet tools couldn't generate the sophisticated reporting and analysis needed for strategic decision-making. Meeting the complex management and reporting requirements of large contracts The Commonwealth Government’s Regional Delivery Partner Program was inefficient and frustrating.

The OmniStar Development team were fantastic, professional and comprehensive in their information gathering, and worked closely with our project team to genuinely understand our issues and devised effective solutions that addressed real challenges.

The solution

The transformation has delivered significant improvements across NRM South's operations. Standardised processes eliminated staff-related inconsistencies and errors, with projects staying on track regardless of team changes. Automated alerts prevent missed deadlines and allow proactive management.

Moving beyond Excel freed up significant staff time previously spent on manual tracking and reporting. Streamlined agreement management with automated workflows improved efficiency. Real-time dashboards and sophisticated data analysis provide insights that were impossible with spreadsheet-based systems, enabling better strategic planning and decision-making.

Automated reporting and comprehensive audit trails ensures compliance with funders, including the Commonwealth Government’s Regional Delivery Partner Program. The system has reduced administrative burden, and the proven methodology has led to efficiency gains positioning NRM South to respond to a rapidly changing landscape and be a leader in environmental project delivery.
